Wood is the most essential raw material when any discussion related to interior design begins. It is not just highly versatile in its usage but it also comes in so many different varieties that it can practically be made suitable for almost all possible purposes.

When it comes to what type of wood are available, wood is divided into two main types:

  1. Hardwood
  2. Soft Wood

We have mentioned the differences between Hard wood and Soft Wood in another post but unlike what the name suggests, its not always possible to just feel the wood and figure if its hard or soft. Hammering nails into them will give a much better understanding since soft wood allows nails to penetrate and come easily while hardwood doesn’t allow either of these as easily.

Most of the species of wooden trees can be divided into these two broad categories of wood.

Wood is a versatile and widely used material with numerous applications ranging from construction to furniture making and artistic endeavors. It comes in a variety of types, each possessing distinct characteristics that make it suitable for specific purposes. Let's explore some of the different types of wood and their unique features.

Acacia:A well known and abundantly available wood, specially in India, acacia is a hard wood very well known for its beautiful reddish brown color, grains as well as its ability to resist scratches and dents. Acacia is a popular wood used for making furniture which is durable and long lasting. It is also used for flooring.

Teakwood:If someone talks wooden furniture, possibly the first thing that comes to mind is teakwood. Another beautiful looking wood which is very hard. Furniture made in properly treated teakwood is known to last for decades and centuries. Teakwood has a lot of restrictions due to its misuse and it is an expensive wood.

Walnut:Walnut is a dark brown hard wood which is used for furniture and wooden floorings.

Pine wood:Pine is a light brown colored softwood which is cheap and found in abundance. A big advantage of pine wood is its smooth surface and very beautiful wooden patterns. This makes it a big attraction for décor as well as in other interior finishes.

We should have a special mention for bamboo. Technically, its not a wood but a grass but its becoming very popular because of its “green” nature. It grows fast, consumes less water for growth and provides a wonderful alternative to the other wood available in the market.

These are just a few examples of the vast array of wood types available. Each wood species has its own unique appearance, density, strength, and workability, which influence its applications. It is important to consider factors such as durability, aesthetic appeal, and environmental impact when selecting a type of wood for a particular project.

Woodworking professionals, artisans, and enthusiasts often appreciate the distinct characteristics of different woods, allowing them to create beautiful and functional objects that showcase the natural beauty of this remarkable material. Whether it's the timeless elegance of oak, the rustic charm of pine, or the exotic allure of teak, wood offers endless possibilities for creative expression and functional design.
